Varicocele is a venous insufficiency condition in which the veins in the scrotum (the sac surrounding the testicles) become engorged due to poor functioning valves. The most common cause of infertility in males between 15 and 25 years of age affects 15-20% of the male population. Vein abnormalities in the scrotum cause varicoceles. The valves within the veins control testicles. Blood circulation becomes irregular due to a defective valve in the vein, resulting in blood pooling. The veins in the scrotum enlarge or become inflamed as a result. A common cause of this condition is the rapid growth of the testicles during puberty. Most varicoceles are found on the left side of the scrotum. A small percentage of cases result in both scrotums being affected.
Varicocele is a medical condition found in men very commonly. It is the swelling up of the veins of the testis which appear like worms in a bag. It may cause various health troubles like :
Visual Examination
The veins that are affected appear like a bag of worms. Doctors use techniques such as the Valsalva maneuver which could be effectively used for the diagnosis of Varicocele.
Ultrasound
Ultrasound is done by passing high-frequency sound waves from the affected area. This helps in forming an image. Ultrasound or sonography uses the principle of the Doppler effect. It converts sound energy into images which could be used for the diagnosis of varicose veins.
Testing Sperm Density
Varicocele also affects the fertility chances in males, by deteriorating the sperm count and density. So testing or diagnosing by sperm could also be proved very effective. Doctors use this technique to get information about the spread of disease as well.
Some of the surgical methods are named as, Varicocelectomy, Percutaneous embolization, and laparoscopy.
Varicocelectomy: The procedure involves making a small incision in the scrotum and tying off or removing the affected veins. This procedure is typically done under general anesthesia and can be performed as an outpatient procedure.
Percutaneous Embolisation: The procedure involves threading a catheter through a vein and blocking off the affected vein using coils or other materials. This procedure is less invasive than a varicocelectomy and may be a good option for those who cannot undergo surgery due to medical reasons.
No obvious risk factors indicate a higher risk of varicocele development. Mostly the varicoceles occurring over time develop during puberty. Obese men have been found to have a little higher risk than healthy men.
Certain complications in Varicoceles:
If varicocele is left untreated, it could lead to severely low levels of the hormone testosterone that lead to various complications like diabetes, osteoporosis, and metabolic syndrome.
The cost of varicocele treatment varies from ₹ 75,000 to ₹ 1,00,000 . The treatment cost varies depending on the severity of the condition, treatment procedure, and hospital facility.
The surgical treatment for varicocele is covered under health insurance. Mostly, all the health insurances cover the surgery for treating varicocele with different insurance policies and funding benefits. Therefore, it is important to get the details for the insurance policies and expense coverage before claiming.
It is important to know that medical treatment for varicocele will not be covered under the insurance policy. It will only cover the cost or expenses of the surgical treatment, but to claim this, you will have to be hospitalized for 24 hours.

In a varicocele, veins in the scrotum (the sac surrounding the testicles) become engorged due to poor-functioning valves. The condition is the most common cause of infertility in males between 15 and 25 years of age affecting 15-20% of the male population.
The veins in the scrotum are responsible for carrying blood away from the testicles. In cases of varicocele, the valves in these veins become damaged or weakened, leading to the pooling of blood within the veins. This pooling of blood causes the veins to become enlarged and twisted, which can cause pain and discomfort.
Treatment for varicocele is typically only necessary if the condition is causing discomfort or if it is leading to infertility. In cases of mild varicocele, lifestyle changes such as wearing supportive underwear and avoiding activities that put pressure on the scrotum may be sufficient to manage the symptoms. In more severe cases, surgical treatment may be necessary to repair or remove the damaged veins.
