Gynecomastia, popularly known as man boobs or male boobs is a graded condition wherein the breasts swell up abnormally due to hormonal imbalance. In females, breast growth along with other feminine characteristics is caused due to the presence of estrogen hormone in the body. Although this hormone is also present in males, however, it is present in reduced quantities as compared to testosterone levels.
Therefore, gynecomastia develops in the male population when the reduced level of estrogen in the body increases or testosterone level decreases. When such hormonal imbalance occurs, the glandular tissues grow gradually and settle down beneath the chest skin resulting in breast growth.
Gynecomastia is the enlarged male breast tissue caused by a hormone imbalance. Male breast tissue enlarges due to reduced male hormones (testosterone) or increased female hormones (oestrogen).
It is normal in the newborns, boys in puberty and older adults to develop gynecomastia because lot of hormonal changes occur in these stages of life. The condition is not considered as a serious problem but sometime it becomes difficult to deal with it. It can be painful to some men and boys and also become a point of embarrassment. In some cases, it may go away on its own but some require surgery to prevent its complications.
Pseudogynecomastia refers to the condition wherein the male boobs comprise fatty tissues behind, around, and under the nipples
True gynecomastia refers to enlarged glandular tissue with minimum or no fatty tissue deposition.
Self Diagnosis: Self-diagnosis of gynecomastia is extremely easy. You just need to observe the symptoms along with the size and shape of your breasts. If a hard lump starts to form around the nipples, it might be a condition of pseudo gynecomastia. In such a case, the firmness of the nipples might get lost.
However, if you observe a disc-shaped growth beneath the breast skin, it might be a condition of true gynecomastia. Mostly development of glandular tissue is associated with the production of milk. Therefore, in some cases, you might notice a discharge from the nipples.
Diagnosis by Doctor: Once you self-diagnose and observe evident symptoms, you must reach out to a cosmetic surgeon. The doctor will perform a physical test to diagnose the actual condition.
Besides the physical examination, the doctor will also recommend a few tests, including blood culture, urine, mammogram, etc. In case of severe conditions, the doctor might also call for a biopsy, wherein a small amount of tissue will be sent to check for any kind of cancerous growth.
To reduce the slight increase in the male breasts, following non-invasive approaches can be adopted :
Permanent treatment of gynecomstia is not possible with non-surgical treatment approaches.
Liposuction
It is a highly-advanced technique, wherein a long, thin needle (known as a cannula) is inserted in a tiny incision made near the margin of the nipple-areolar complex to eject the fatty tissues through suction. Liposuction is of different types based on the technology used, including laser, vaser, etc.
Gland Excision
In this surgical procedure, the fatty tissues are excised using a scalpel inserted through a small incision made around the areolar region of the nipple. Once the procedure is complete, the holes are closed, which heal automatically within two-three days. This surgical technique is mostly preferred when the fatty tissues have become glandular and cannot be broken and sucked out.
In case of repetitive escalation, it might cause spinal deformity and defects in sitting and standing postures. As far as mental health is concerned, most men shy away and become self-conscious due to their physical appearance. This results in depression due to social anxiety.
Some of the common complications associated with gynecomastia include:
If gynecomastia is left untreated, it can impact both the physical and mental health of the patient. The continuous enlargement of the breast can pressurize the back muscles and they might not have the strength to support them, thus resulting in chronic backache.
The average cost of gynecomastia surgery ranges between ₹ 35,000- ₹70,000 depending on the expert diagnosis and location.
Gynecomastia surgery is a cosmetic procedure that is often not covered under health insurance policies because it is considered an elective surgery. However, some insurance plans may cover the surgery if it is deemed medically necessary due to a hormonal imbalance or other medical conditions that cause breast tissue enlargement.
If your health insurance plan does not cover gynecomastia surgery, you will need to pay for the procedure out of pocket. The cost of the surgery can vary depending on various factors, such as the surgeon's experience, the type of anesthesia used, the complexity of the surgery, and the geographic location of the facility.
