WHAT IS GYNECOMASTIA

Gynecomastia is the enlarged male breast tissue caused by a hormone imbalance. Male breast tissue enlarges due to reduced male hormones (testosterone) or increased female hormones (oestrogen).

It is normal in the newborns, boys in puberty and older adults to develop gynecomastia because lot of hormonal changes occur in these stages of life. The condition is not considered as a serious problem but sometime it becomes difficult to deal with it. It can be painful to some men and boys and also become a point of embarrassment. In some cases, it may go away on its own but some require surgery to prevent its complications.

2

  • Overuse of antibiotics
  • Excessive consumption of alcohol

DIAGNOSIS

Self Diagnosis: Self-diagnosis of gynecomastia is extremely easy. You just need to observe the symptoms along with the size and shape of your breasts. If a hard lump starts to form around the nipples, it might be a condition of pseudo gynecomastia. In such a case, the firmness of the nipples might get lost.

However, if you observe a disc-shaped growth beneath the breast skin, it might be a condition of true gynecomastia. Mostly development of glandular tissue is associated with the production of milk. Therefore, in some cases, you might notice a discharge from the nipples.

Diagnosis by Doctor: Once you self-diagnose and observe evident symptoms, you must  reach out to a cosmetic surgeon. The doctor will perform a physical test to diagnose the actual condition.

Besides the physical examination, the doctor will also recommend a few tests, including blood culture, urine, mammogram, etc. In case of severe conditions, the doctor might also call for a biopsy, wherein a small amount of tissue will be sent to check for any kind of cancerous growth.

DO's
Take healthy diet
Do fat burning exercises
Get early treatment
DONT's
Excessive alcohol intake
Do not take steroids or drugs
Do not ignore for long

TREATMENTS

NON SURGICAL TREATMENTS

To reduce the slight increase in the male breasts, following non-invasive approaches can be adopted :

  • Regular exercises
  • Decreasing alcohol intake
  • Weight management strategies
  • Steroids use must be stopped

Permanent treatment of gynecomstia is not possible with non-surgical treatment approaches.

SURGICAL TREATMENTS

Liposuction

It is a highly-advanced technique, wherein a long, thin needle (known as a cannula) is inserted in a tiny incision made near the margin of the nipple-areolar complex to eject the fatty tissues through suction. Liposuction is of different types based on the technology used, including laser, vaser, etc.

Gland Excision

In this surgical procedure, the fatty tissues are excised using a scalpel inserted through a small incision made around the areolar region of the nipple. Once the procedure is complete, the holes are closed, which heal automatically within two-three days. This surgical technique is mostly preferred when the fatty tissues have become glandular and cannot be broken and sucked out.

RISKS AND COMPLICATIONS

In case of repetitive escalation, it might cause spinal deformity and defects in sitting and standing postures. As far as mental health is concerned, most men shy away and become self-conscious due to their physical appearance. This results in depression due to social anxiety.

Some of the common complications associated with gynecomastia include:

  • Bleeding
  • Fluid collections
  • Contour irregularities
  • Loss of nipple skin
  • Inverted nipples
  • Numbness of breast skin and nipples

IF LEFT UNTREATED

If gynecomastia is left untreated, it can impact both the physical and mental health of the patient. The continuous enlargement of the breast can pressurize the back muscles and they might not have the strength to support them, thus resulting in chronic backache.

COST

The average cost of gynecomastia surgery ranges between ₹ 35,000- ₹70,000 depending on the expert diagnosis and location.

INSURANCE COVERAGE

Gynecomastia surgery is a cosmetic procedure that is often not covered under health insurance policies because it is considered an elective surgery. However, some insurance plans may cover the surgery if it is deemed medically necessary due to a hormonal imbalance or other medical conditions that cause breast tissue enlargement.

If your health insurance plan does not cover gynecomastia surgery, you will need to pay for the procedure out of pocket. The cost of the surgery can vary depending on various factors, such as the surgeon's experience, the type of anesthesia used, the complexity of the surgery, and the geographic location of the facility.

Know more about Gynecomastia

Enlarged male breast is called Gynecomastia which can be seen in men of almost all ages. Most often it occurs in newborns, adolescents, and older adults.

You may notice gynecomastia as a button size abnormal growth under the nipples. The breast lump can be felt easily and is tender to the touch. These breast lumps can be felt in one or both breasts.

Gynecomastia cannot be prevented as it is caused due to various hormonal changes that are not in your control. But the risk of breast enlargement can be reduced by choosing certain medications over others that can lead to major hormone changes. This must be done with doctor's consent.

Gynecomastia is the enlarged male breast tissue caused by a hormone imbalance. Male breast tissue enlarges due to reduced male hormones (testosterone) or increased female hormones (estrogen).

It is normal in newborns, boys in puberty, and older adults to develop gynecomastia because a lot of hormonal changes occur in these stages of life. The condition is not considered a serious problem but sometimes it becomes difficult to deal with it. It can be painful to some men and boys and also become a point of embarrassment. Frequently Asked Questions

Gynecomastia can go away without any medications, if it occurs before puberty. But gynecomastia in post puberty and adult stages require surgery to reduce the breast size.

Diet and exercises are some non-surgical ways of getting rid of mild gynecomastia and the best method is liposuction in case of severely visible male boobs.

No, gynecomastia is not normal in men. It is a medical condition in which the male breast becomes enlarged and swells up. Though the gynecomastia condition is quite common in males of middle age but if it is not treated on time it can become severe.

If gynecomastia is not treated it can lead to pain in breasts, uncomfortable feeling and breast cancer. In some men, gynecomastia causes sever back pain.

No, gyno is the term that refers to all the conditions of female reproductive organs and problems. Gynecomastia is derived from the gyno term because in this condition males develop female-like breasts.

After puberty, if the gynecomastia does not go away on its own and the chest does not flatten even after 3 years of the end of puberty, the gynecomastia is considered permanent. It can only be treated with liposuction-assisted mastectomy or other surgical procedures.

Unfortunately, exercise alone cannot significantly reduce the amount of breast tissue in gynecomastia. Surgery may be required to remove excess glandular tissue and achieve a flatter chest.

Gynecomastia can become permanent after two years or more, and in some cases, it may not go away on its own without treatment such as medication or surgery. The condition is more common during puberty and in older men due to changes in hormones.
