Theme of WORLD AIDs Day 2022- “Equalize.”
This year’s AIDS theme focuses on equality over all those things that are pushing us back from ending AIDs. UNAIDS and other AIDS prevention organisations are taking preventive steps and are focusing more on HIV diagnosis. The theme also promotes equity in ending HIV and pushing humans for HIV tests. 1st December is set as World AIDS day to take preventive steps of togetherness against AIDS. This year’s AIDS day theme is “equalize.” AIDS in full form is “acquired immunodeficiency syndrome”.
What does the term “AIDS” signify?
As the name suggests, acquired Immunodeficiency syndrome is an immune-related chronic disease. It is not a common cold that stays for 3-5 days. This disease or infection persists for years in the body, even lifelong.
Cause
AIDS is a viral infection. The causal organism for AIDS is the human immunodeficiency virus, commonly known as HIV. Viruses always attack the immune system of the host. However, some viruses hijack the immune system of the host completely. HIV belongs to the retroviral family of viruses; these are enveloped viruses with a pair of single-stranded genomes of RNA.
Clinical Stages of HIV
Stage 1 – Acute HIV infection:
- 1. Early infection from the HIV virus leads to acute HIV infection.
- 2. This stage is quite contagious (infection can spread easily to many people) because the infected person’s blood is full of the HIV virus.
- 3. Common symptoms of this stage of HIV are very similar to the common cold or flu.
-
Stage 2- Chronic -HIV infection:
The second stage of HIV is asymptomatic or commonly considered latent and at this stage the affected person does not seem to be infected with HIV.
Stage 3- The deadly stage -AIDS:
This stage is life-threatening and chronic as it hijacks the immune system of the body and interferes with its ability to fight against other infections. In the third stage, the patient is prone to various infections that can not be cured easily because the immune system is already weak.
