What is LASIK Surgery?

The most frequent vision correction surgical treatment, laser-assisted in situ keratomileuses, or LASIK, employs laser technology to treat:

1. Myopia (nearsightedness): When you look at things close up, your eyesight is clear, but when you gaze at things far away, it gets foggy.

2. Hyperopia (farsightedness): is a condition in which you can see objects well at a distance but your vision is fuzzy for items closer to you.

3. Astigmatism:  Because of a flaw in the form of the cornea, astigmatism creates hazy vision.

A tiny flap of tissue is cut in the corner of the eye, similar to other refractive operations, to restructure the cornea, allowing light entering the eye to focus properly on the retina and obtain clear vision. This procedure will allow you to get rid of your corrective lenses or spectacles.

What to Expect after Lasik Surgery:

Your eye may burn, itch, or feel as if something is in it just after the surgery. You may feel some discomfort or slight pain, and your doctor may recommend that you take a mild pain reliever. Both of your eyes may tear or water. Your vision will likely be foggy or blurry. You will be tempted to rub your eye, but resist! Rubbing your eye may cause the flap to detach, necessitating further treatment. You may also notice light sensitivity, glare, starbursts or haloes surrounding lights, or the whites of your eyes appearing red or bloodshot. Within the first several days after surgery, these symptoms should significantly improve.

You should plan to take a few days off work until the symptoms go away. If you suffer significant pain, or if your eyesight or other symptoms worsen rather than improve, you should contact your doctor right away rather than wait for your regular appointment.

Within the first 24 to 48 hours after surgery, you should see your doctor, and then at regular intervals for the next six months. Your doctor will remove the eye shield at your first postoperative visit, test your eyesight, and inspect your eye. To assist prevent infection and/or inflammation, your doctor may prescribe one or more types of eye drops for you to use at home.

Depending on the amount of exercise required, how you feel, and your doctor’s advice, you should wait one to three days after surgery before commencing any non-contact sports.

You may need to wait up to two weeks following surgery or until your doctor recommends you otherwise before using lotions, creams, or make-up near the eye to help prevent infection. After surgery, your doctor may advise you to keep washing your eyelashes for a while. For the next 1-2 months, avoid swimming and using hot tubs or whirlpools.

Boxing, football, karate, and other high-contact sports should be avoided for at least four weeks after surgery. It’s critical to keep your eyes safe from anything that could get into them, as well as from being hit or bumped.

Following LASIK surgery, your vision will settle for 3-6 months.

Because glare concerns can make activities like night driving difficult at this time, you may need to make some longer-term adjustments as you heal. Following surgery, some individuals suffer lingering brightness or halos. After allowing your eyesight to stabilize, we may be able to remedy some of these difficulties with re-operation.

If you experience any new, unexpected, or worsening symptoms following surgery, contact your eye doctor right once. Such symptoms could indicate a condition that, if not addressed promptly, could result in visual loss.
