BPD is a medical diagnostic (bpd ultrasound) parameter to check the size of fetal growth. It is the abbreviated form of biparietal diameter, which is an important parameter for calculating the growth of the fetus’s skull. BPD is measured on the axial plane passing through the cavum septum and thalami (the two sections of the fetal skull present on the external surface).

Other parameters used by doctors to track fetal growth are

  1. 1. Head circumference
  2. 2. Femur length
  3. 3. Abdominal circumference
  4.

All the above parameters can be done using ultrasound techniques for tracking the health status of the baby, any genetic abnormalities, or developmental disorders.

The Head circumference parameter measures the size of the head at a particular stage of pregnancy. Along with other fetal parameters – femur length and abdominal circumference, head circumference is used in obtaining the weight of the fetus within the womb.

What is the Meaning of Cavum in an Ultrasound Report?

Cavum is a medical term used in fetal brain studies. Cavum pelucidi is considered as a landmark for forebrain development. During an ultrasound cavum and thalamus are the two positions of the fetal skull that helps in calculating the size of the fetal brain. Also, these two positions (cavum septum and thalami) are traversed through to get information regarding fetal brain development and related anomalies if they exist.

Things every pregnant women must know before BPD ultrasound

  1. 1. Wear loose clothes
  2. 2. Remove ornaments or any metallic thing
  3. 3. You will be asked to wear a hospital gown or simply undress the lower abdomen area to get a scan.
  4. 4. No need to stop eating or drinking unless stated by the doctor
  5. 5. You must stay in a relaxed posture throughout the examination.
  6.

The procedure of a BPD ultrasound

During BPD ultrasound

  1. 1. The patient will lie down straight on the hospital bed.
  2. 2. Laboratory practitioners will apply ultrasound gel over the abdominal region that needs to be examined.
  3. 3. The lab practitioner holds the ultrasound probe and presses it gently over the abdominal region to be scanned.
  4. 4. High-frequency transducers send ultrasonic signals toward the fetus that are reflected back, and reflected signals are received by transducers which transmit the signals to the analyzer to convert them into electrical signals and then to the computer system. The computer station retrieves the electrical signals.
  5. 5. The transducer is ultrasound’s most essential part sending  ultrasonic sound signals to the target part of the fetus and receiving back the reflected radiations.
  6. 6. These signals are analysed and transmitted to the computer workstation to produce images. Which are converted into reports by the radiologist and sent to the concerned doctor of the patient.

Why did the gynecologist ask for a BPD ultrasound?

Gynecologists always track the growth status of the baby at least every month during pregnancy. To calculate the size, weight, and other parameters of the fetus, doctors have various methods. BPD ultrasound is one of the most important parameters to measure the size of the body by measuring the size of the skull. The baby’s head is the marker for estimating the overall size of the baby. The BPD ultrasound helps to identify the following conditions:

  1. 1. The overall growth of the baby
  2. 2. Developmental status of the baby’s brain
  3. 3. Genetic anomalies
  4. 4. Developmental defects
  5. 5. Defects in skull formation etc.
