Is it common for you to binge-watch your favourite shows on Netflix until 3 or 4 in the morning? Are you too occupied with work or too late to attend online classes to eat meals?
We tend to think that our bodies are invincible when we are young. Consequently, we abuse our health, unaware of the consequences. Studies show that one’s health deteriorates after 27 years of age.
Unhealthy Habits Among Youth
Among young adults and youngsters today, unhealthy habits include:
One in five young adults and even teenagers skip meals during the day. Consequently, the body’s metabolic rate and blood sugar levels decrease. There is even a risk of developing multiple gastric conditions, stomach ulcers, and so on.
Caffeine consumption is detrimental to one’s health. Caffeine dehydrates the body to a large extent and worsens anxiety. The beverage is most certainly not suitable for young minds.
Mental health disorders are associated with sleep deprivation. The human body cannot function for 24 hours a day. Irritability and impulsivity increase when not getting enough sleep. New brain tissue is formed during sleep, preventing our growth and development.
As a result of the work from home, many young adults are glued to their devices. Long hours spent at a desk with little to no movement can lead to obesity, type 2 diabetes, indigestion, back and neck pain, etc.
How to Keep Lifestyle Diseases at Bay?
To maintain a healthy lifestyle, you need to spend time on your health. To boost your immune system, you should immediately quit smoking and turn to yoga and exercise. As early as the teenage years, we need to take care of our bodies. Our health in later years is determined by this period. Thus, leading a healthy life even when you’re young is incredibly crucial. The same can be attained by including the following steps in your routine:
Eat Regularly & Healthy
To develop properly, our bodies require all the essential macro- and micronutrients. It is advisable to eat frequently but in smaller amounts. Drinking alcohol and consuming junk food regularly should be avoided. As a result, certain conditions, like Cirrhosis, can permanently damage your liver. Ideally, your diet should include protein, leafy vegetables, fruits, low-fat dairy products and whole grains.
Walking briskly for thirty minutes can sometimes be all that’s needed. You should make time for physical activity every day, even if you are swamped with work and school assignments.
It is recommended that teenagers get at least 10 hours of sleep every night, while young adults need at least 8 hours. The ability to concentrate, think, and work better is enhanced when we follow an appropriate sleeping cycle.
Take Care of your Mental and Physical Health
The millennial generation and Gen Z are more anxious than previous generations, according to multiple studies. As the world’s distress increases, environmental and social pressures have also exacerbated a sense of helplessness among Gen Z. No limits to work hours, endless assignments, and no social life during the pandemic has also left many young people feeling exhausted and restless. Therefore, we must take time out to relax and do something we enjoy.
