Kolkata: The Air quality index has breached the “very poor” category pointing towards the alarming situations in the city. A drop in wind velocity and decreasing temperatures are making the air quality situation ‘red’. Particulate matter of 2.5 is as thick as a human hair and can directly move to the bloodstream. The elevated levels of AQI leads to persistent coughing.
According to the experts, the effects of cough and viral fever usually last a week. However, the adverse environmental conditions have been favourable for the viral spread.
A scientist from the pollution control board says that the particulate matter of 2.5 is as thick as a human hair and can directly move to the bloodstream. These particles carry the noxious chemicals through the nasal cavity right into the bloodstream. Pollutants are present in the atmosphere at the level of normal breathable height of adults.
